Infection, especially bacterial, causes fever and increased activity in the body, which may have a harmful effect on heart muscle function and can cause worsening of symptoms frequently leading to hospitalisation. The most common infection in people with heart failure occurs in the lungs (pneumonia) and may worsen shortness of breath.
